Aquatics Director-Full Time-Ingram Family YMCA


Under the supervision of the Branch Executive Director, the Aquatics Director/Membership Engagement is responsible for the overall management and operation of the aquatic's facility and programs. They are responsible for creating a welcoming atmosphere, driving sales, and connecting members to others through programs that share the work of the Y as a cause driven organization. The Aquatics Director/Membership Engagement Specialist will work to strengthen relationships with members and build communities around common goals while maintaining safety throughout the branch. They will be responsible for managing those functions in accordance with the stated mission and policies established by the YMCA of the Triangle Area.

  • General
    • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
    • Builds positive relationships with members by serving needs and concerns and taking the initiative to provide excellent customer service.
    • Recruits and hires staff and volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity. Responsible for onboarding and developing them for success.
    • Performs managerial functions to include accurate payroll processing, timesheet approval, time off request approval, necessary HR paperwork.
    • Serves as the branch liaison to the Association Aquatics, Membership and Risk departmental meetings. Delivers trainings to branch in accordance with association department guidelines.
    • Ensures all branch staff are certified in department specific certifications including, YMCA Lifeguarding, Basic Life Support, Oxygen and Basic First Aid. Develops yearly certification class schedule for first time certifications and re-certifications, ensuring the branch needs are being represented. Maintains supplies related to trainings.
    • Mobilize members and community partners as volunteers in support of the YMCA cause through the Annual Campaign. This includes assisting in recruitment, planning and raising money.
    • Ability to work afternoons, evenings and weekends as needed and to have a presence to ensure that staff are upholding YMCA standards.
    • Ensures departmental compliance with all branch and association standards in programs, administration, business and operations.

    • Delivers high quality aquatic programs that support member health and wellness goals plus a positive member experience.
    • Ensures accurate communication of pool scheduling to members, ensuring all communication avenues are up to date.
    • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations and conducts and ensures proper maintenance of pools. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
    • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and prior to shift ending.
    • Conducts regular rescue ready audits as part of ongoing risk management.
    • Provides leadership and guidance for the maintenance and operations of all aquatics. Manages the ordering of pool supplies, chemicals and maintains awareness of needs to pool operations.
    • Leads or assists with all staff meetings and in-service trainings. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
    • Prevents, prepares for, and responds to incidents in and around the pool area. Continually maintains accident and incident reports and records of equipment and safety inspections.
    • Oversees and manages lifeguards and head lifeguards. Creates and maintains schedules of lifeguards and head-lifeguards according to program needs. Maintains an open line of communication with direct supervisor, guards and other support staff.
    • Oversees the management of the aquatics program, including developing and monitoring the program budget to meet fiscal objectives; compiling program statistic to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in program; securing and scheduling the pool facilities; and creating and scheduling classes.
    • Connects the Aquatic Programs and other aspects of the branch ensuring a positive and safe environment including but not limited to providing aquatic safety training to key non-aquatic staff as needed.

    • Serves as part of the Leadership Engagement team to include opening or closing in order to develop and maintain relationships with members and program participants on a scheduled basis. Provides direct service as a lifeguard, swim instructor or certification instructor as needed.
    • Responsible for Tours, Sales, Y Connects, 8 Weeks to a New You and all other Membership and Fitness initiatives. Follows branch protocols for prospective members, sales leads, and cross-selling programs.
    • Serves as a member advocate and concierge while on duty, with a focus on facilitating small group opportunities for members to connect.
    • Promotes volunteerism as a part of the overall continuum of the member experience.
    • Understands all program offerings, pricing, business policies and procedures, and is a proficient power user in Personify Go and Personify 360.
    • Supports Welcome Center, Access desks, Gym and Wellness Floor to ensure all members are being served in a quality manner.
    • Creates a team environment that concentrates on delivering exceptional service to members and participants.

  • Bachelors' degree in a related field preferred and/or 2-3 years of related experience.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Experience in leading others, pool programming, pool maintenance, volunteer cultivation, staff development and supervision.
  • Must be professional, courteous and friendly, have a high level of initiative and be a self-starter.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, be well organized, and be able to respond appropriately in a dynamic, fluid environment.
  • Ability to determine and set priorities; as well as the capacity to respond and handle multiple tasks appropriately in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment is critical.
  • Must meet all requirements to physically perform all necessary rescue and survival skills.
  • Must have ASHI Basic Life Support, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications prior to start date.
  • Must maintain YUSA Lifeguarding and Lifeguard Instructor Certifications.
  • Certified Pool Operator Certification required.
  • YUSA National Swim Lesson Certification preferred.
  • Multi-lingual desired but not required.
